Official Ubuntu circle with wordmark. Replace ...

A while ago I researched on how to get a Brother MFC-7440N to work via network on Ubuntu 10.10.

I went through quite a few suggested solutions, among them the “official” brother solution.

Brother provides a Linux driver (http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.html#MFC-7440N), but they only supported 32-bit, which is quite old-school and there have been no updates to the Linux driver since June 2008.

The fastest working solution I found was the following:

Step 1

Go to System -> Administration -> Printing
Select Add

Step 2

Unfold “Network Printer” and select “AppSocket/HP JetDirect

Step 3

Type the ip of the printer (e.g. 192.168.0.2) into the host field and click foward.

Step 4

Now select the printer driver: Brother DCP-1200 Foomatic/hl1250 with 600dpi, a4
